Shuqaiq Water and Electricity Co. (SqWEC) owns and operates the Shuqaiq IWPP. It is the second phase of the Shuqaiq complex that produces water and power for the Assir region and city of Jizan. This green field project included the design, construction and commissioning of three 340MW oil fired power units combined with Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination and potabilisation facilities. Shuqaiq IWPP provides a net electrical output of 850 MW in combination with a total capacity of 212,000 m3/day of desalinated water.
The facilities include the flue gas desulphurization units that use sea water to meet PME and World Bank standards. The site includes a special fuel oil unloading jetty 5 km off-shore, connected to shore by a marine pipeline.
The facility’s initial commercial operation started on 1st May 2010 and all three power units and water units achieved their full commercial capacity on 24th August 2010 - eleven weeks ahead of schedule. The power and water offtaker is the Water and Electricity Company.
